Don’t cast a clout ‘til May is out!

Blue skies overhead - taken in the wildlife garden on the edge of the Suffolk Show

‍May is over, can I put my summer dress on now?

‍Not likely. they’ve been relegated to the back of the wardrobe again as the storm clouds gather.

‍The whole world is in turmoil. And if it’s not the bizarre weather getting us hot under the collar it’s the bins!

‍I was at a Spoken Word event the other evening, having managed to avoid the flash flooding on the way. Wondering what to read I flicked through my new book.

‍Oh yes, a story about bins, a love story about bins, not about falling in love with a bin, that would be too mad even for me, but a meet cute that happens while putting out the bin.

‍It’s called The Whistler and the Bin Lady.

‍Once I’d opened the flood gates there were more bin related offerings. And a poem or two about flies, obviously circling the new contentious food waste bins.

‍I love the creativity of other writers; you come away from these kinds of events invigorated and inspired.

‍I’m not sure I have been inspired to write that much in May, but it was certainly a busy month. I had an eye test, ordered new glasses, had a blood test and saw the hygienist – ok maybe they are not the most exciting adventures. I’m flicking through the diary and the beginning was quite quiet but then the month started to fizz as the temperatures soared and the ice creams melted.

‍There was the local May Show and then the Suffolk Show, where I performed my good deed of sticking up the hem of the bishop’s trousers with sellotape to stop her tripping over. It’s not every day you get to fix a wardrobe malfunction of a VIP. Although I have performed this feat once before when I stuck MP Mo Mowlan’s skirt hem up to stop it dangling.

‍ Maybe I have missed my true vocation in life and should be on hand at red carpet events with sticky tape and scissors! Although they probably already have a seamstress on hand with proper needle and thread for such emergencies.

‍No such wardrobe disasters in Paris, where I went to watch the French Open tennis and got to see Naomi Osaka play tennis in a dazzling GOLD dress. I went with my oldest son and we had an exciting time; it was just far too hot and over far too soon.

‍Most of the travelling was uneventful but the Eurostar was 59 minutes late getting back into St Pancras, another minute and we could have claimed a partial refund – c’est la vie – as they say as they say in France.

‍Oh, and I had a mini book signing for my latest book, did I mention it? Only in passing. Having a second book out is different from the first time around, there is not so much fanfare. Although I am excited deep down and waiting for a review – anyone? Anyone?

‍Meanwhile how are we already in June? My weeks are getting even busier with events in Bury St Edmunds, Grantham and Dereham in Norfolk. Keep an eye open on my socials and I will try to remember to share events before they happen.

‍Now my only dilemma is what to wear. It should be summer and my pretty dresses are screaming for an outing. Especially if I have an event alongside Mrs Ruth Leigh, who always makes such an effort. But the forecast is still mixed so I might err on the side of caution swapping the floaty florals for dynamic dungarees. Whatever the weather I will be bright and cheerful with a big beaming smile on my face because – well - I HAVE ANOTHER BOOK OUT!!!!!!
